Writing for Us

We invite you to share your stories about Jefferson County with us! The Magazine of the Jefferson County Historical Society began chronicling the area’s rich history in 1935. Collectively the many articles featured in the publication have created a comprehensive record of County history.

If you would like to submit an article to add to this publication, you may do so at any time during the year. The Magazine is published annually in December and the deadline for submission is September 1.

Subject matter for articles should address some facet of the county’s history. To get an idea of previous content, see the Magazine index of articles.

A few general rules:

  • Sources should be cited with footnotes. Readers like to know where your information comes from.
  • Articles vary in length from two to fifty pages. Allowing for four to five articles per issue, an article of 4,000 to 5,000 words is a suggested length. But depending on subject matter, some texts will be longer than others. In the event that we have more submissions than space, we may bump yours to next year’s issue.
  • Photos and maps enhance your story. Please include high resolution graphics in a separate file and note where they are to be located in the text. Include captions and sources, and make sure you have permission to use the graphics.
  • Keep formatting of your article simple since it will be re-formatted for consistency with other articles.
  • Finally, please add a few sentences about yourself. What would you like the reader to know about you, the writer?

If you have an idea you would like to explore before writing, or you need help in planning your manuscript, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss your project. We look forward to you adding your research to the time-honored stories of Jefferson County.
